DONALD
D. RULEAUX is a registered tribal member of the Oglala Band of the Lakota Nation (Sioux). He was born in Martin,
South Dakota, in 1931 to an English mother and French/Indian father. His early childhood was spent on the Pine
Ridge Indian Reservation, which is reflected in his portrayal of the Lakota people.
Mr. Ruleaux graduated from high school in Gordon, Nebraska in 1950. He attended Kansas City Art Institute at the
insistance of his wife, Betty, because she felt he had the potential to become a professional artist. He later
attended Chandron State College in Chadron, Nebraska, where obtain his B.A. He received a prestigious fellowship
to The National Gallery/George Washington University in Washington, D.C. In 1968 he received his Master's Degree
in Art Education from Arizona State in Tempe, Arizona.
Mr. Ruleaux has worked as a cartographer for the U.S. Geological Survey and as a package designer.
He has been both a professional artist and art educator (K-12, junior college and college) for over 35 years. During
this time, he has received many awards, grants and prizes and has exhibited widely throughout the United States.
Working in many different mediums and styles, he is probably best known for his beautiful watercolors and his rare
silverpoint drawings. His most recent endevours have included the creation of a series of lithographs from stone
tablets.
Mr. Ruleaux's works are included in the collection of the Department
of the Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs; The DeRance Corporation (Milwaukee, Wisc.); The Heritage Museum (Pine
Ridge, SD); and many private collections in the United States, Japan, England, Scotland, Australia and South Africa.
Since his return to South Dakota in 1993 he has taught the Oscar Howe summer workshop for the University of South
Dakota, Vermillion. He has also worked as an artist/draftsman for the movie "Lakota Woman" which was
filmed in the Black Hills area.
