Grandmother
Adelina
Since I was born, I have known Grandmother Adelina. She is a wise Chumash Elder from the Santa Ynez reservation. She gave me my tribal name when I was little. She is a hero because she is keeping the Chumash culture alive because she is helping keep the songs and dances alive. She encourages me to dance and sing. She supports me when I try to learn the language. Grandmother Adelina is not a close relative, but I feel like her nephew. She has always been nice to me and has been there at tribal gatherings where I dance. She is a good teacher because she is always present and helpful for everybody, but especially for the youth of the tribe. |
